This year’s edition of the Open Air Opera Festival Stage of the Ages on Tsarevets Hill attracted audience from all over the world. Among the opera and ballet fans in front of the stage, which used the palace of Bulgarian medieval kings as stage set, there were organised and individual tourists from all over Europe, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Egypt, Mexico, USA, Argentina, China, Korea, Japan, Australia. Groups from Spain, France and Italy arrived especially for the festival.
More than 8000 people attended the two ballet and four opera nights of the festival. The festival programme featured the operas "Madame Butterfly" by Giacomo Puccini, "Cavalleria Rusticana" by Pietro Mascagni and "Gianni Schicchi" by Giacomo Puccini and the ballets “Giselle” by Adolphe Adam and "Zorba the Greek" by Mikis Theodorakis. The two one-act operas "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "Gianni Schicchi" were performed together for two nights – on 9 and 10 August and attracted lots of children and young people among their audience.
The Summer Open Air Festival “Stage of the Ages” is organized by Veliko Tarnovo Municipality and the Municipal Tourism Agency “Tsarevgrad Turnov”, together with Sofia Opera and Ballet. The event is one of the highlights of Veliko Tarnovo bid for European Capital of Culture in 2019.
