Veliko Tarnovo is promoting the Martenitsa in Europe again

5 February 2014

For a second consecutive year Veliko Tarnovo is promoting the Martenitsa in Europe. Martenitsa is the Bulgarian symbol of health, happiness and fertility. The initiative is a joint event with the municipalities of the region, supporting the candidacy of the Boyar town Veliko Tarnovo for European Capital of Culture in 2019.

Martenitsas will be made in February by volunteers in community centers, schools, cultural institutions and clubs. The largest and most beautiful martenitsas will be sent to the twinned cities of Veliko Tarnovo in Europe and around the world to be decorating emblematic places on March 1. Red and white symbols will be sent to all cities of the old continent which have already been or are about to be European Capitals of Culture. Martenitsas will be sent to the European Capitals of Culture for 2014 Riga and Umeå, and the Italian cities Cagliari, Lecce, Matera, Perugia, Ravenna and Siena, which continue the competition for the European Capital of Culture in 2019. Martenitsas will be accompanied by a video showing the process of their making as well as their symbolism.

With the event "Martenitsa -Bulgarian symbol in Europe", last year Veliko Tarnovo decorated with one meter high martenitsas 21 twin cities in 19 countries worldwide.

You can join in the workshops for martenitsas in the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo on February 8, 15 and 22 from 10:30 to 14:30 pm, and in Mall Veliko Tarnovo on February 22 and 23 from 11:00 to 15:00 pm.
